Injection of the trochanteric bursa can be performed using palpation, ultrasound, or fluoroscopy. However, Cohen et al discussed that fluoroscopy is necessary to demonstrate that the injected medication will appropriately spread at the painful structure. While Cardone endorses a local anesthetic volume of 3-5mL along with steroid be injected at the bursa, Morton and Len note that larger volumes, such as 10mL bupivacaine 0.5%, provide greater pain relief than smaller volumes.
